Laboratory Infrared Spectra of Polycyclic Aromatic Nitrogen Heterocycles: Quinoline and Phenanthridine in Solid Argon and H2o
نویسندگان
چکیده
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common throughout the universe. Their detection and identification are based on the comparison of IR observations with laboratory spectra. Polycyclic aromatic nitrogen heterocycles (PANHs) are heterocyclic aromatics, i.e., PAHs with carbon atoms replaced by a nitrogen atom. These molecules should be present in the interstellar medium, but have received relatively little attention. We present midIR spectra of two PANHs, quinoline (C9H7N) and phenanthridine (C13H9N), isolated in solid argon and frozen in solid H2O at 15 K, conditions yielding data directly comparable to astronomical observations. Quinoline and phenanthridine have been detected in meteorite extracts, and in general these nitrogen heterocycles are of astrobiological interest, since this class of molecules includes nucleobases, basic components of our nucleic acids. In contrast to simple PAHs, which do not interact strongly with solid H2O, the nitrogen atoms in PANHs are potentially capable of hydrogen bonding with H2O.Whereas the IR spectrum of phenanthridine in H2O is similar to that of the same compound isolated in an argon matrix, quinoline absorptions shift up to 16 cm 1 (0.072 m) between argon and H2O. Thus, astronomers will not always be able to rely on IR band positions of matrix-isolated PANHs to correctly interpret the absorptions of PANHs frozen in H2O ice grains. Furthermore, our data suggest that relative band areas also vary, so determining column densities to better than a factor of 3 will require knowledge of the matrix in which the PANH is embedded and laboratory studies of relevant samples. Photochemistry of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cosmic water ice
Context. Mid-infrared emission features originating from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are observed towards photon dominated regions in space. Towards dense clouds, however, these emission features are quenched. Observations of dense clouds show that many simple volatile molecules are frozen out on interstellar grains, forming thin layers of ice. Recently, observations have shown that...

متن کاملInfrared spectra of protonated coronene and its neutral counterpart in solid parahydrogen: implications for unidentified interstellar infrared emission bands.
Large protonated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (H(+) PAHs) are possible carriers of unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands from interstellar objects, but the characterization of infrared (IR) spectra of large H(+) PAHs in the laboratory is challenging. IR absorption spectra of protonated coronene (1-C24 H13 (+) ) and mono-hydrogenated coronene (1-C24 H13 (.) ), which were produced upon e...

The aim of this study was to compare the toxic effects of selected two- and three-ringed PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene, and anthracene) and their N-heterocyclic analogs with one (quinoline, acridine, and phenanthridine) or two (quinoxaline, phenazine, and 1,10-phenanthroline) nitrogen atoms on the survival and reproduction of Enchytraeus crypticus in artificial soil. Toxicity of compounds was...

Infrared absorption spectra of the CH stretching region were observed for naphthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and perylene using a heated, supersonic, slit-jet source and cavity ringdown spectroscopy. Band positions and intensities recorded with 0.2-cm-1 resolution were compared with previous gas-phase and argon matrix isolation experiments, as well as theoretical calculations. The l...
